-The Almoravids, was a Berber dynasty from the Sahara desert that spread over North-Western Africa and in the Iberia peninsula during the eleventh century.
-They created the first Moroccan empire. (Almoravid Dynasty.)
-They were invited by the Muslim rulers in Iberia to help them against the Christians. They were holding back the Christian advance, they overthrew the Muslim princes whom they said was religiously relaxed this expanded their empire over present-day Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Gibraltar, Tlemcen (in Algeria) and a part of what is now Senegal and Mali in the south, and Spain and Portugal to the north in Europe. - the empire stretched 3,000 kilometers north to south. Yusuf ibn Tashfin had brought what is now known as Morocco, Western Sahara and Mauritania under his rule and in 1062 had built the city of Marrakech as his capital.
Rise to power geography
-In 1080, he conquered the kingdom of Tlemcen (in modern-day Algeria) and founded the present city of Algiers, extending his rule as far east as Oran. In 1075, the Almoravids conquered Ghana Empire.

-Ali ibn Yusuf was fasted and prayed while his empire fell under the combined action of his Christian foes in Iberia and the Almohads in Morocco. (Ibid)
-They started there civilization in the Sahara and then took over more land when the Muslim rulers in Iberia asked them help fight against the Christians.
-They were holding back the Christian advance, then they overthrew the Muslim princes whom the Almoravids said were religiously relaxed.

-The Almoravids also conquered the Ghana empire bringing new land there they could sell the gold that the Ghana empire got and mine for more there.
-They would also thrive of the control of the Iberian peninsula and of control of the Spanish side too. Controlling the Straight of Gibraltar meant that no ships that any ships that wanted to trade with Rome, Greece, or Egypt would not be able to get through without paying a price.
